Professional Hair Brushes For Extensions

Hair Extension Brushes FAQs

  • What hair brush is best for extensions?

The best hair brush for hair extensions is one that is specifically designed for gentle detangling, without risking snagging on clips or bonds. Soft-bristled paddle brushes like the Remi Cachet Paddle Brush, or specialised flexible nylon brushes like the Remi Cachet Smoothing Brush are ideal.

  • How often should you brush your hair extensions?

Hair extensions should be brushed 2–3 times per day to stay on top of tangles, preventing knotting and matting which can lead to damage. The Remi Cachet Mini Brush is the ideal handbag-friendly tool for your clients to keep on hand for brushing on the go.

  • Should you comb or brush hair extensions?

You should brush using a specialisedhair brushfor hair extensions.Wide tooth combsare suitable for more extensive detangling of hair extensions and should only be used on wet hair.

  • What happens if hair extensions get matted?

If hair extensions get matted, your client will experience:

    • Tangling – Matting begins with tangling, caused by lack of brushing. As natural hair sheds from the scalp, it can tangle around hair extension bonds or clips if not whisked away by a specialised hair extension brush.
    • Pain – The added pressure of built-up tangles near the root of the hair can cause discomfort and even pain if left unaddressed.
    • Damage – Over time, this tension can lead to breakage and even loss of the natural hair, potentially leaving your client with bald spots or painful scalp sores.
    • Compound knotting – At this point, compound knots form. This is the result of tangled areas gathering more and more shed hair, resulting in large, embedded matts close to the scalp.

Matted hair extensions are a sign that your client hasn’t followed recommended extension care and maintenance guidelines. Hair extensions are an investment, and can last a long time, while causing minimal damage – if cared for properly. Recommend a specialised hair extension brush to your clients, and instruct them to brush multiple times per day to avoid matting.

  • How do you untangle matted hair extensions?

If your client comes to you with matted hair extensions, you will need:

    To detangle matted hair extensions:

    1. Condition: Apply a generous amount of leave-in conditioner to lubricate the hair.
    2. Comb: Hold the extensions gently but firmly, close to the scalp, and using the wide-toothed comb, start combing down from the very bottom of the extensions, making your way up inch by inch as the hair is smoothed out.
    3. Divide: For severe knots, use you fingers to gently divide the hair apart. Do not tug hard.
    4. Tackle matting: If there is extreme matting at the roots/bond attachment, apply a hair oil and use the tail of a pin-tail comb to gradually split the natural hair away from the extension, undoing the matt. This will take time and patience.
    5. Rinse: Once detangled, rinse out the conditioning treatment.
    6. Dry and brush: Apply heat protectant, blow-dry using a vented blow-dry brush, and brush with a soft-bristled hair extension brush to finish.
