Protect And Correct - Caring For Your Clients Hair In The Sun

Summer is just around the corner, and it’s the perfect time to start educating your clients on how to properly protect and care for their hair during the warmer months. Let's discuss our top tips on how you can educate your clients in the chair...

Firstly, as professionals, we know that summer brings a whole host of challenges for hair health... UV rays, salt water, chlorine, hard water, and even certain sun creams can all take a toll. That’s why we must empower our clients with the knowledge and tools they need to keep their hair healthy, vibrant, and resilient all season long.

Use your time behind the chair to go beyond styling, this is your moment to educate. Share expert advice tailored to their hair type and lifestyle, recommend the right treatments and protective products, and explain why these steps matter. When clients understand the 'why', they’re more likely to follow through with the 'how'.

Whether it’s dropping into your conversations, your advice to always wear a hat when in the sun, telling them to keep away from heated products or keeping their hair hydrated with an oil, these small yet impactful conversations build trust, loyalty, and long-term hair success.

You’re not just a stylist, you’re their hair expert, and summer is your chance to shine.

Hair Extensions On Holiday

At Remi Cachet, we always prioritise the long-term health and quality of your clients' hair, and that includes giving honest, expert advice when it comes to holiday haircare.

Our professional recommendation is to avoid wearing hair extensions while on holiday. The combination of sun exposure, chlorine, salt water, and even certain sun protection products can lead to discolouration, dryness, and premature colour fade.

If your clients are considering taking their extensions abroad, it’s important to have an open, informed conversation. By explaining the potential impact and sharing our expert advice, you’re empowering them to make the best decision for their hair.

It’s not about saying ‘no', it’s about guiding them toward long-lasting, healthy results.

Protecting Hair In The Sun

For clients who feel that hair extensions are a non-negotiable for their holiday or for those wearing them throughout the sunny summer months, we’ve put together essential tips they must follow to keep their hair looking and feeling its best.

By following these expert-approved steps, your clients can enjoy their summer while maintaining the quality and longevity of their extensions.

1. Avoid Hard Water

2. Cover It Up & Tie It Back

3. Be Cool

4. Steel Clear Of Extra Heat

5. Use A Discolouration Solution

1. Avoid Hard Water

Hard water contains a high concentration of minerals, most notably calcium and magnesium, which can have a negative impact on your client’s hair. Compared to soft water, these mineral levels can cause build-up, dryness, and in some cases, lead to discolouration, particularly in hair extensions.

This is especially important to consider when travelling to sunny holiday destinations where the tap water is not drinkable due to its mineral content. While it may be obvious that such water can affect the skin, many clients don’t realise the damage it can also cause to their hair and extensions.

That’s why it’s crucial to educate your clients on how to protect their hair when near or in water. Whether they’re enjoying a dip in the pool or the ocean, remind them to always keep their head above water to minimise exposure.

And don’t forget, the risk isn’t just at the beach or by the pool. Showering in hard water can also contribute to mineral build-up and fading. For this reason, we recommend clients use bottled water to rinse their hair while abroad, especially when wearing extensions.

Our founder, Victoria Lynch, explains the effects of hard water on hair extensions in her video below. It’s a must-watch for both stylists and clients looking to understand how to better protect their hair while travelling.

2. Cover It Up & Tie It Back

Encourage your clients to invest in stylish yet practical accessories like a wide-brimmed sun hat or a lightweight cap, perfect for keeping their hair protected from direct sun exposure.

When spending time at the beach or by the pool, they must tie their hair up. This helps prevent unnecessary contact with water, as well as exposure to sun creams, perfumes, and lotions, all of which can affect both the condition and colour of their hair extensions.

Direct UV exposure can significantly accelerate colour fade and compromise the overall health of the hair. A chic sun hat isn’t just a fashion statement, it’s a smart way to shield the hair from harmful rays while maintaining a polished holiday look.

3. Be Cool

Temperature plays a key role in preserving hair colour, particularly when it comes to hair extensions. High heat can accelerate colour fade, so keeping the hair cool is essential for maintaining vibrancy.

While it may be difficult for your clients to avoid the heat entirely when enjoying the sun, as mentioned previously, accessories like a sun hat can help offer some protection. However, one of the most effective ways your clients can care for their hair is during washing.

Advise your clients that when using recommended products, such as shampoos and conditioners, it’s important they are applied and rinsed out with lukewarm or cool water, never hot. This ensures the products perform effectively while helping to protect the hair colour and maintain the health of the extensions. This simple switch can make a significant difference in preventing colour fade and preserving the integrity of the hair.

Small adjustments can lead to longer-lasting results, and your client’s colour will thank you for it.

4. Minimise Heat Styling

During the summer or while on holiday, your client’s hair is already under increased stress from continuous sun exposure. Adding additional heat from styling tools like straighteners or curling wands can compound this damage and accelerate colour fade, particularly in hair extensions.

Encourage clients to embrace low-maintenance, heat-free styles such as braids or sleek ponytails. These not only protect the hair but also offer a stylish and effortless look perfect for warmer weather.

If heat styling is absolutely necessary, remind them to always use a low heat setting and apply a quality heat protectant beforehand, such as our Miracle Mist, which works beautifully on both extensions and natural hair.

5. Use A Discolouration Solution

If your clients are experiencing discolouration, often caused by mineral build-up from hard water, chlorine, or environmental exposure, Malibu C offers a highly effective, salon-trusted solutions.
